Introduction To Our School

Calvary Baptist Schools (CBS) is a private Christian school located in the city of La Verne, California and operated as a ministry of Calvary Baptist Church, founded in 1953. The church is a member of the Baptist Missionary Association (BMA). The focus of our school and church ministry is mission work, both in our local community and throughout the world.

Our school serves families with children from the ages of two in preschool through 12th grade. Students enrolled at CBS have the opportunity to experience a complete, family-oriented relationship through the classes and programs we offer at various grade levels. Since 1973, we have been authorized to accept foreign students through the I-20 program.

We offer a complete academic program for students with varying abilities. We offer a general diploma for students planning to attend a junior college or tech school, a vocational diploma which incorporates outside work experience, an academic diploma for students planning to enter the University of California system, and an academic diploma for students planning to enter the California State University system.

Our Philosophy of Education

The educational philosophy of Calvary Baptist Schools is based on a God-centered view of truth as it is presented in the Bible. Our goal for students attending CBS is to develop a personal relationship with God and to develop a Christian mind and Godly lifestyle. We want our students to seek God's will for their lives. We want to equip our students with the basic tools of learning by providing a quality academic education fully integrated with Biblical principles.

In order to be successful in training students, we must work as a partner with parents and family members who will uphold these values in all aspects of their family life. We believe that all children should have the opportunity to experience a Christian education. CBS works closely with families of students with special needs to determine whether or not we can offer courses at a level that will meet their needs.

Courses & Activities

Calvary Baptist Schools offers a complete Christian-based academic curriculum for students preschool through high school. In addition to the core classes, we also offer art, Spanish (through level 3), music, computer science, and yearbook classes. As a member of ACSI, our students participate in annual competitions such as the speech meet, math olympics, spelling bee, science fair, and art fair.

We host the regional art fair for ACSI, generally displaying between 500 - 1000 pieces of art annually. Our music class is a choral group with a mission of sharing God's word through music to other Christian schools, churches and groups throughout Southern California. Our yearbook, The Cub, is published annually and was awarded first place with special merit as the best overall yearbook for small schools by the American Scholastic Press Association.

Our Statement of Faith

We believe that the Bible is the inerrant, inspired Word of God. We believe that God is a Triune Being, consisting of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We believe that Jesus was born of the virgin Mary, conceived of the Holy Spirit. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures.

We believe that all who believe in Him are justified by their faith on the grounds of his shed blood. We believe that Jesus arose from the dead, ascended into Heaven, and is coming again for the believers.

We believe that as Lord of Lords and King of Kings, He will establish His kingdom on earth. We believe that the primary responsibility of the believer is to share the Gospel of Christ in all the world and to every creature.

Academic Achievements

Students enrolled in the Pre-K program through the 12th grade are tested annually. We use the Stanford 10 Achievement Test to evaluate the progress of our students. Students who have been enrolled at Calvary Baptist Schools throughout their academic career have demonstrated above-average scores on these tests.

Graduates of CBS have been accepted by major universities and colleges in the state of California, as well as out-of-state institutions. Additionally, students have joined various branches of the armed services and honorably served our country throughout the years.

Grading Policy

Calvary Baptist Schools provides progress reports every three weeks. Grades are given on a percentage basis, as follows:
                                                 90 - 100% = A
                                                   80 - 89% = B
                                                   70 - 79% = C
                                                   60 - 69% = D
                                                     0 - 59% = F
Report cards are mailed on a quarterly basis. Grades are converted to a letter grade and recorded on cumulative records on a semester basis.

Acceptance Policy

Calvary Baptist Schools does not discriminate in admissions with respect to sex, race, color or national origin. We accept students of myriad academic abilities. However, not all students are automatically accepted at CBS. Specifically, students who actively oppose attending here, students who desire to work against the cause of Christ, students who fail to cooperate with school rules and policies, students who live independently of parents or guardians, students who are pregnant or are parents may not attend Calvary. Students who have been asked to leave may petition our school board for consideration. Students accepted under this condition are admitted on a probationary basis, subject to periodic review.

"Calvary Baptist has been a blessing for our family. The year our daughter was to begin Kindergarten, we were undecided about which school she would attend. We were so pleased with the staff, class size, and curriculum, we made our choice shortly after our first visit to Calvary. The teachers and administration are truly an extension of our family now, and we have a real partnership with them in our daughter's education. We love the school, and look forward to seeing our daughter continue to grow in the Lord, as well as excel academically."

Testimonials From Our School Parents

In a season where the girls’ basketball team set a lot of firsts for Calvary Baptist, the Lady Cougars made the CIF Southern Section Division 6A championship game and then the state playoffs for the first time in school history!
The playoff run was an exciting, roller coaster ride for the Lady Cougars and their fans!  The playoffs began with wins over Joshua Springs and West Valley Christian, both schools are over 3 times bigger than Calvary!  Then, in what was one of the most exciting games in recent Calvary memories, The Lady Cougars outlasted Lake Arrowhead Christian in overtime, 58-56.  The visiting Lady Cougars trailed by one at the end of the first quarter, but rallied to lead at halftime, 25-23.  Once again, the lead changed hands and the Lady Cougars trialed by one at the end of the 3rd quarter 35-34.  Coming down the stretch in regulation, the Lady Cougars led by 4 points with just over a minute to play, but Lake Arrowhead managed to score quick baskets, one with 9 seconds left to tie.  Then, as the last seconds ticked off the clock, Cassandra Haro just missed winning the game with a last second shot.
But, in overtime, the Cougars outscored the Eagles 8-6 in overtime, led by freshman Lauren Franklin’s 6 points in the overtime period.  Overall, the Cougars were led by Allison Dial’s 21 points and 4 assists.  Lauren Franklin added 19 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 steals.  Cassandra Haro added 12 points with 9 rebounds and 4 steals.  Adrianna Adrade also pulled down 15 rebounds and 7 steals, while scoring 4 points.  With the Cougars up 58-56, Lake Arrowhead had time for one last shot, but freshman Nicki Johnson, who had come in for Cassi Breeden who had fouled out, blocked the last second shot attempt and saved the victory for the Lady Cougars.
The championship game was played at Colony High School in Ontario.  The Lady Cougars played the #1 ranked North County Christian Crusaders.  The championship game is a huge stage, and the lady Cougars showed some nervousness, playing their worst half of the season and finding themselves down 24-6 at halftime!  But, after they relaxed the Lady Cougars outscored the Crusaders 20-6 in the 3rd quarter and pulled the score within 3, 30-27, early in the 4th quarter.  But, the Crusaders answered with a 17-6 run down the stretch as the Lady Cougars got into foul trouble and never could seem to make the shots they had made all year.  North County won the game 47-33, ending the Lady Cougars 15 game winning streak.  In fact, the last time the Lady Cougars lost before the championship game was December 30th of 2009!  Again, Allison dial led the way in the championship game with 19 points and 3 steals.  Adrianna Andrade chipped in a career-high 18 rebounds and 8 steals.  Lauren Franklin and Cassandra Haro each scored 5 points a-piece in the losing effort.
But that wasn’t the end of the Lady Cougars’ season.  Again, for the first time in school history, the lady Cougars went to the state playoffs!  They drew a VERY DIFFICULT draw in View Park of Los Angeles, a school with 500 students.  The #2 seeded Knights showed why they are one of the favorites to win the state title with an impressive victory over the Lady Cougars.  Now the Lady Cougars know what it will take to go further next year!
What a season for the Lady Cougars!  They are currently on a 41 game winning streak in International-League play.  They will definitely be one of the favorites next season as they return everyone except the lone senior, Cassi Breeden.  Their 19 wins (19-9 overall) set a school record for wins by a girls basketball team in a season.  That means, over the past 4 seasons, the Lady Cougars record is 60-25!  And, with plans to work hard in the summer again, there is no reason to think that the Lady Cougars will not be challenging for the Division 6A championship again next year!  This year’s statistical leaders were:
