"A wonderful opportunity has been given to us to go and share the love of God with the people of the Dominican Republic, using our hands and our words. We are going through the ACSI Short Term Mission Trip Programs. We will leave from LAX on July 24th and return on August 2nd. While we are still receiving the exact locations and job duties of our trip, we know that we will be in the Dominican Republic at a school doing a Vacation Bible School and some light construction work.
We will be meeting students there and encouraging their walk with the Lord and helping them in their own ministries to the people of their communities. This is a great opportunity for us to put into practical use our love for the Lord. All those who have gone before us report that they come back changed people. This will be a great time for us to grow deeper in the Lord and grow stronger roots that will last a lifetime.
Like anything, there is a cost involved. While the price of airfare is not fixed yet, it will cost each team member approximately between $1,600-$2,000, maybe more, maybe less. So, carefully and prayerfully consider if this is something that you want to do. Applications for going on the trip are available upon request in the church office with Pastor Dial. This money covers everything except any souvenir money people might want to take. The application form and a $100 deposit is due in the church office by Wednesday, December 12th.
Please be praying for the members of our team right now. Also, please pray if you can help donate toward the cost of the trip. If there is any questions you may have, please don't hesitate to call the church office! May God bless you and remember our mission team in prayer! Food: Breakfast typically calls for a serving of Mangu, a mix of plantains, butter, onions, and cheese which can be found at most hotel and resort restaurants. Mangu has been called the mashed potatoes of the DR and is a must try for all visitors. Locals are also known to prepare the dish for evening meals. They call it, “La Bandera Dominicana,” or the Dominican Flag Meal. Lunch is considered the most important meal of the day, and usually consists of rice, beans, meat, vegetables, and fried plantains to ensure energy throughout the afternoon and evening. Another popular dish is Sancocho, a Spanish-style stew usually served with rice. Ingredients include various roots, green plantains, avocado, and typically chicken or beef. A combination of seven meats is Sancocho prieto. Goat meat, a staple of many Dominican homes, may also be used in this recipe. Locrio, or Dominican rice, varies with its preparer. An adaptation of the Spanish paella, locrio is made with anchiote, since saffron spice is unavailable. Near Samana, coconut trees decorate the landscape and provide a delectable milk sauce for fish, known as Pescado con Coco. Throughout the south central coast, bulga, or whole wheat, is a main ingredient in Quipes or Tipili (bulgur salad). Other favorite Dominican dishes include chicharron, yucca, cassava, pastelitos.
